I'm sure this is a totally weird tutorial, but my family loves them so thought I'd share (eek...that's a bad runon sentence). My husband stole one of my dowel rods for making korker bows. Then, I found him slicing hotdogs into spirals on it. Then, he went out and cooked them on the grill. It was a last minute 10 o'clock at night right before our vacation quick and easy dinner. As someone who is not a HUGE fan of hotdogs...these came out delicious! So I thought I'd share.
Step 1 - Stick the hotdogs on some kind of skewer. Then slice around the hot dog in a spiral. Since it's on the skewer, you can slice all the way through to the skewer. (Sorry this picture is blurry. I got the bright idea to share our spiral delights in the middle of his slicing.)
Here is finished spiraled hotdogs. Ready for grilling!
Step 2 - Grill those suckers! It takes just a minute or two because they are spiraled and cook fast. Be careful with turning them and picking them up because they are delicate.
Step 3 - Voila! Finished hotdog -- prepare as desired.
My kids love these things, except the baby - she's a little freaked out by them. I'm not sure why, lol. I don't know why, but these taste so much better than regular ol' hotdogs. I think it's the grilling of the entire thing inside and out, maybe.
Enjoy!
I saw this on yahoo the other day and we tried it that night. I agree that they taste much better than hot dogs that are grilled normally. It also made our hot dogs long enough for the buns, so there wasn't that usually "empty bun" bite towards the end. The condiments settled nicely into the spirals so nothing fell out while we ate them. We'll definitely be spiral cutting our hot dogs in the future.
ReplyDeleteI use the stem of my metal meat thermometer as my "dowel" I worried about the splintering from the wood, and bacteria. The stem of the thermometer is just long enough. I was not a hotdog lover(did not even like) before grilling them this way. It makes a tremendous difference...I ate 2 last night!
ReplyDeleteWe like to use bamboo skewers (found in the kitchen gadget area of Target). They only cost a couple of bucks for a whole bag of them. I make my spirals a little large because I'm afraid they will fall apart otherwise. We like to keep the hotdogs on the skewer until it's just about on the grill, then we use a fork to slide the hotdog off the skewer and directly onto the grill. I like mine almost blackened. The extra surface area that the spiral gives you almost gives the hotdogs a bit of a bacon texture and taste. Maybe it's just me.
ReplyDeleteAs a life long lover of hot dogs, thanks for this super idea. Glad hubby thought of it. Can't wait to try it out.

I'm a little slow on the uptake. Do you slice the hot dog with the knife as you turn the hot dog on the dowel?
ReplyDeleteThanks, Kris
Yes! You skewer them and slice all the way down in a spiral. My husband is really good at it. I, however, am not.
DeleteI think I am missing the step where you actually cut it.
ReplyDeleteI updated the steps to include slicing the hotdogs. Sorry I'm an idiot and didn't do it sooner.
